In contrast I found the summaries of the plot and characters mostly repetitive and dull. May 04, Julia rated it really liked it Shelves: standalone , Was mir ein bisschen gefehlt hat, das sind Literaturangaben.

It is a small, compact, hard cover book filled with useful information about Jane's life, novels, characters, movie adaptations, and the like. Sprinkled throughout the chapters are facts and quotations, such as: Pocket Fact: "Some of Jeane's earliest encouragement for her writing came from her neighbour Anne Lefory, or Madame Lefory as she was known.

Anne was a lively and intelligent woman who was a great reader of Milton, Pope and Shakespeare, and was even known to write poetry herself More than a guide, this handy reference will inform me and help me to recall important facts as I visit the places where she lived and worked. Outside of travel, this guide allows me to quickly look up facts as I write my posts.

I've taken the attractive paper cover off, for the book tucks in quite nicely in my briefcase or handbag, and its hard red cover is sturdy enough to withstand the wear and tear of travel.

I recommend this book to teachers, students, and Janeites whose interest in Jane Austen is never ending. Read my review here.

Too large to take along on journeys, it nevertheless is a handy reference in any Jane Austen library. I want to especially thank sussexbestwalks, who I follow on Twitter, for arranging to send this book to me. What a lovely read and find. This would make a sweet gift for any Janeite, and I'm certainly glad to have it in my collection as it did contain some interesting facts that I didn't know about previously, but overall this didn't contain anything new for lovers of Austen.

I'm not sure who this book is aimed at. It contains detailed summaries of the novels 32 pages , so not for someone who knows the books well. A further 24 pages go to the film and television adaptations, so possibly not for those who know Austen's work mainly through these. The outline of Austen's life is concise and there's a fairly useful glossary at the end.

Interesting for individuals new to reading Austen, but, apart from some interesting tidbits regarding the film and television adaptations, there is not much new here for knowledgeable Janeites.

Changing the title is never a good sign. Happily, I switched to Jane Austen's Emma , a masterpiece of character and emotion written precisely with eloquent economy.

Sadly, this pocket bible creates a similar dynamic: prosaic that's OK but uninspired, lugubrious and structured in such a way that we re-read the same points over and over. And yet The book is also quite good at the social mores and conventions of the time. Always a good gauge of a piece of non-fiction writing is discovering stuff I did not know - during World War One wounded soldiers were given Austen novels to help aid their recovery, ostensibly to conjure in their minds a peaceful rural England, but perhaps also to reinforce established notions of class stratification.

Jul 05, Jeslyn rated it liked it. Quick read, some good info, some repetition, and a noticeable amount of grammatical errors. Would be a helpful resource for high schoolers who are assigned Austen for a class and haven't read her works.

Aug 19, Anita D rated it really liked it. Very enjoyable, more for people who do not know a lot of the books nor the time period. For more serious fans, it is a review of everything we already know. Too much time I think spent on reviewing the plot and characters of the books. Jan 27, Laura Geater rated it liked it.

Brilliant for the absolute novice, interesting to a Austen fan Waste of time for a jane-ite. Jul 30, Hisuin rated it really liked it Shelves: uk-ir-usa-ca-aus , english , clasicos , non-fiction. It covers the following topics: 1 Biography. Timeline of Jane Austen's life 2 History and context 3 Austen's geography 4 Influences and literary context 5 Austen's novels 6 Characters in Jane Austen's novels 7 Love, romance and marriage in Jane Austen's novels 8 Film and TV Adaptations of Austen's novels It is quite complete and covers many topics surrounding Jane Austen's world that help to understand better her stories and characters.

I think it would be specially useful to read some of the chapters 2 and 7 before getting into any of her novels, to get a better idea of how society was back then and of course, the rest of the book once one has read her books. I have found interesting the fact that it has a good amount of "pocket facts", scattered here and there in the book, which are curious remarks or funny comments related to the author and the books.

Summing up, if you consider yourself a Janeite, or you have read some of her books and are interested in knowing more, this book is a good choice to make. What a handy little thing! I read this as I was watching "Persuasion" and "Emma," and I found myself referring to it constantly. The guide delves into Jane's life and the morals of the time in which she lived, in addition to the expected tidbits on each book. Each of Austen's books has a chapter devoted to it, and then Ms. Ivins has chapters devoted to brief profiles of main characters, the eligible bachelors, the rogues, the heroines, and the bad girls.

I also liked the trivia in the last chapt What a handy little thing! I also liked the trivia in the last chapter, which reviews the film and television adaptations of Austen's work.
